Every country has its own election history, and the Philippines has its own too. First, it started when the Filipinos fought for their independence during foreign colonization, and eventually won. This would not be possible, if they weren’t able to choose the best person to lead in their revolutions. Afterwards, the Filipinos decided to have a democratic country. Being an independent nation, they came up with a plan of putting a leader that will govern their country, so they established the first presidential election of the Commonwealth of the Philippines on September 16, 1935. This was the first election since the enactment of the Tydings-McDuffie Act that paved the way for a transitory government. Senate President Manuel Luis Quezon won against revolutionary President Emilio Aguinaldo. His election victory came after Aguinaldo was accused of taking bribe from the Spaniards when he was exiled to Hong Kong. Another contender was Gregorio Aglipay, founder and supreme bishop of the Iglecia Filipina Indepediente (Philippine Independent Church). Quezon's running mate Senate President Pro Tempore Sergio OsmeƱa won as Vice President of the Philippines. That election was massive and manually done. In the succeeding elections, manual voting was used until the year 2009.
